Interesting idea of designer Muhyeon Kim. Create a plug that displays the energy consumption of the connected device. Up until now, consumers had to buy an energy meter to measure the energy used by their household items.
The new plug gets rid of those bulky energy meters, and replaces them with an all-in-on plug concept. No information are displayed on the plug if no device is connected to it. If a device gets connected, it either shows the standby energy usage of the device, or the energy usage while the device is active.
Pretty intriguing design, don’t you think? The environmental benefit largely depends on two factors: The energy consumption of the build in energy meter, and the customers willingness to react if devices use to much energy.
For standby items, this could mean to pull the plug, so to speak, for other devices to find options to research their energy hunger, for instance by increasing the temperature level of the fridge or cooler in the household.
